The motor oil in an engine works in absorbing as well as holding either organic or inorganic substances. Examples of organic contaminants are oxidized oil, bus, and bacteria. Inorganic impurities, on the other hand, include dust, metallic particles, and all other components that can wear off the engine. It is good to note that while these contaminants can cause problems to the engine's function, there are Volvo oil filters to help save the day. These come in different types.
Types of Oil Filter Media
Inside the oil filter, there is a membrane or medium that is responsible in clearing out and filtering out all contaminants found in the motor oil. There are different types of filter media for oil filters. One is the cellulose media which is commonly present in disposable oil filters. It can hold up to 10 microns of particles and clean up to 40% of the oil that comes in contact with the engine. If you have this type of media in your oil filter, it needs to be replaced every 3,000 miles.
Then there is the microglass version. This is considered the most high-end among oil filters. It is made with fibers that are approximately 10 times finer than that of cellulose media. They can be replaced once every two to five years, or every 10,000 miles, depending on which comes first.
In between the cellulose and microglass media, there is also the synthetic filter media type. It is commonly found in higher quality oil filters. It can remove up to 50% of particles with the size of 20 to 40 microns. This should be replaced every 7,000 miles, some every 5,000 miles.
Specific Types of Oil Filters
Primary oil filters are among the most common types of filters installed by car engine manufacturers. Otherwise known as full flow filters, these can filter 100% of the motor oil. They have lower flow restriction and can allow smaller contaminant particles to easily pass through them. Some manufacturers install a fail-safe bypass valve which is useful just in case the filter membrane becomes clogged.
Then there are secondary oil filters which are installed by car engine manufacturers in addition to those of primary oil filters. This type of oil filter works only on a small portion of the motor oil, about one to ten percent. It cleans that portion before it routes back the oil to the engine. It has an independent function when compared to primary oil filters, specifically tasked to remove any additional contaminants in the filter. This will then make it easier for you because you do not have to replace motor oil as frequent as usual. You can even choose to install one on your ride in case the engine does not come with one.
Other types of oil filters include: conventional oil filters that use cellulose membranes to filter out smaller contaminants: thermal chamber types that remove impurities and can raise motor oil temperature to burn off certain contaminants; spinner oil filters that use a spinning motion in order to hold and trap contaminants; and magnetic oil filters that remove metallic impurities found in motor oil.
