Although you may have got replacing your windshield wipers down to a fine art, there are times that you may need to replace your windshield wiper arm that houses the wiper blades. This can be a bit more difficult than just replacing the wiper blade. Damage can occur due to simple wear and tear or even vandalism.
Different Types of Wiper Blade Arms
As you might expect there different types of wiper blade arms. These are clip-on, push-on or bolt-on. Each of them has their own way of being replaced. The first thing to do is find out which type of wiper blade arm your Porsche has. You can do this by tracking the arm back to the base where it is attached to the car under the hood.
Bolt-On Replacement Wiper Blade Arms
You will need to activate the wipers and then stop them half way up the windshield and mark this position with a wax crayon. Next if there is a plastic cover on the nut, remove this by twisting off. Next, remove the nut with your socket. There may be a bit of maneuvering required to get the right amount of leverage to unscrew this. Unscrew the nut in an anti-clockwise direction, whilst holding the wiper blade arm to prevent it from slipping and causing damage.
Clip-On Replacement Wiper Blade Arms
If you have a clip-on wiper arm there will be tab to be depressed when you reach the base of the wiper arm. Again, turn on the activate the wipers and then stop them half way up the windshield and mark this position with a wax crayon. At the base of the wiper arm you will find a slide lock, flange or lip. You will need to see what kind of clip your wiper arm has. Then rotate the windshield wiper arm away from the windshield and open the slide lock or flange. This can often be done with your fingernail, but sometimes it can be rusted into position, so a flathead screwdriver is necessary. Remove the wiper arm by either releasing a slide lock that is present (you will need to move it backwards and forwards to remove the wiper arm) or use your screwdriver to price space in the flange releasing the wiper arm so you can twist it to remove it.
Push-On Replacement Wiper Blade Arms
Your vehicle may have a push-on wiper arm. Activate the wipers and then stop them half way up the windshield and mark this position with a wax crayon. Find the hinge at the base of the wiper arm and then find the hole in the arm. Next, lift the wiper arm away from your windshield and insert a nail or similar object through the hole in the wiper arm. You can then release the wiper arm as it will stay in place because of the nail. Rock the wiper arm until it is released.
Replacing The Wiper Arms
Ensure you are replacing the Porsche windshield wiper arm with the same type as you have removed. Use wire brush to clean the wiper arm post. Next, apply lubrication to the wiper blade post. Install the wiper arm by reversing the procedure you took to remove the wiper arm. When you have finished check the new wiper arms work.
