Recharging The AC Unit Of Your Car

A common reason behind ineffective cooling in the car is due to leakage in the system, causing loss of refrigerant. The A/C unit of a car is dependent on the thermodynamic features linked with coolant gases under the optimum pressure, operating within a closed loop. Topping off the unit with fresh coolant is not quite the solution. Nowadays, the advance air conditioning systems are maintenance free, and they do not require recharging, unless there is enough leakage of refrigerant.

In case there is no leakage in the system, ask your mechanic to perform a leak evaluation and pressure diagnostic test. The mechanic will look for leaks, after topping it off with coolant and pressurizing it. An ultraviolet dye might be included sometimes to assist the mechanic in spotting small leaks.

What Are The Steps In Porsche AC System Recharging?

Some of the materials that you need before getting started with the process include:

  • Meat thermometer
  • AC Dispenser with low side gauge and trigger
  • Safety gloves and glasses
  • Refrigerant.

Here are the steps you need to adhere to, for recharging your AC unit!

  • Start up the engine and tune your AC to the maximum point.
  • Verify whether the AC compressor is engaging. In case it is, the system is having low level of refrigerant. This is particularly when the air is still propelling little cold. On the other hand, if there is no engagement of clutch with the compressor, it has either failed, or the system is extremely low on refrigerant.
  • Carry out pressure testing by turning the vehicle off and locating the pressure port. It is located on the side of the passenger, and will have a grey or black cap on it with letter ‘L’.
  • The recharge hosepipe from the kit is attached. Simply position the quick fitting, found on the recharge hose’s end, over the port. Shove down tightly until you hear a clicking voice. Pulling the trigger at this point should be avoided, since it will result in release of refrigerant into the air.
  • Restart the car and ensure that the AC is at its highest point. Watch for the A/C compressor engaging with the clutch, as you monitor the gauge. In case the pressure is under 40 psi, it means the system is not fully charged.
  • Gradually top off the system with refrigerant by threading the can onto the recharge hose. Once done, hold it upright and press the activation for five to ten seconds to put in the refrigerant. After releasing the trigger, verify the pressure gauge to make sure there is no overcharging.
  • Get inside the car, and use a thermometer to note the temperature by inserting it into either of the A/C vents on the driver side. A full-charged system will propel air up to 28 degrees cold.
